Letter from the Executive Director

Dear Friends,

Last week's decisions in D.C. not to pursue a repeal of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) or push through a replacement at this time was a victory of sorts. Thank you to everyone who stayed the course over the past five months and kept a steady and vocal opposition going as the Administration and a faction of Congress held the persistent threat of ACA repeal or replacement over the heads of millions of Americans. To be sure the fight for quality health care coverage and effective mental health services isn't over at the national or state level.

Speaking Against Bad Health Care Policy Proposals and For Good Ones

In June, MHAPA was one of 142 organizations that signed onto PA Health Access Network’s (PHAN) protect Medicaid letter to Senators Toomey and Casey.

The letter’s key message: "Our organizations write to express our strong opposition to legislative proposals, such as the American Health Care Act (AHCA), that would cause millions to lose their health care. In particular, we are deeply troubled by proposals that would undermine state Medicaid programs by capping federal funding on a per capita (or block grant) basis and phase out the Affordable Care Act's [ACA] Medicaid expansion."

Norristown State Hospital's Civil Section Closure

A few years ago, Mental Health Partnerships (MHP), then known as Mental Health Association of Southeastern Pennsylvania (MHASP), began expanding its supporter base and recruiting board members from outside the behavioral health space. But people from the corporate and business worlds didn’t easily grasp what the organization was all about. The name "Mental Health Association of Southeastern Pennsylvania" didn't say it all!

Recovery Through Peer Support: Meet Dontae George Myers, Glenn Koons Scholarship Recipient

Cambria County resident, Dontae George Myers was a young 29 when he lost his mom. Still grieving over his parents' separation years before and emotionally raw from five years of caring for his ill mother, Dontae went into a tailspin after her death. He was hospitalized and then spent time in rehab for co-occurring disorder.

MHANPMental Health Association of Northwestern PA (MHANP)

During Mental Health Month in May, MHANP honored four people with its seventh annual I'm The Evidence (ITE) award. Jack Halli, Aubrey Hohman, Albert Thebeault, and Jeremy Berquist were all present on Wednesday May 17, 2017 to receive their justly deserved honors for exemplifying the successful pursuit of mental health recovery. Each honoree represents different, very personal recovery journeys as is true of all consumers who develop a vision of a full and meaningful life that accommodates illness and is not dictated by it.
