Department of Public Welfare Releases Child Abuse Report to Increase Awareness, Highlight Prevention
The Department of Public Welfare released the 2011 Annual Child Abuse Report, which offers statistics on child abuse cases in Pennsylvania and on continued efforts to better protect children from abuse and neglect.
This report also includes the efforts of the Pennsylvania Citizen Review Panels. Broken into regions around the state, the panels have been working with the Department of Public Welfare for two years to find innovative and practical ways to build on the current systems and efforts in place to protect children.
Youth Day to Be Observed at Capitol – This Monday 10:00 – 3:00!
On May 21, “Youth Day at the Capitol” event will be hosted in co-sponsorship with Magellan MY LIFE youth groups, the Pennsylvania System of Care Partnership and the Mental Health Association of Southeastern Pennsylvania. Youth leadership groups from around the state will join efforts in one voice to raise awareness for mental health and foster care issues as well as identify system changes that can better support youth in fulfilling their career aspirations and developing healthy, rewarding lives. Legislators, officials and community members are invited to join youth leaders in a post-presentation lunch and time of mingling. Various youth groups will also schedule visits with their local representatives to speak specifically about the impact of mental health related issues on the lives of youth in their communities. Informational resources will be available and attendees will enjoy displays of youth artwork and youth performances. Participating youth leadership groups include MY LIFE, Youth M.O.V.E. Philly, Active Minds and several youth advisory boards.

National Conference Consumer Scholarship deadline extended to May 25th
The deadline to apply for a consumer scholarship to the 2012 National Zarrow Mental Health Symposium and Mental Health America Annual Conference – “From Housing to Recovery” (September 19-21, 2012 in Tulsa, OK) has been extended to May 25th. In order for an application to be considered, it must be postmarked by May 25th via US Postal Service. No emails or faxes will be accepted.
Scholarships include registration fee, per diem, hotel, ground transportation and travel to the conference.
SAMHSA’s National Prevention Week Is May 20–26
National Prevention Week is a new annual health observance supported by SAMHSA that celebrates the work that community organizations and individuals do year-round to prevent substance abuse and promote mental, emotional, and behavioral well-being.
